2013 | PERSONAL PROJECT, DEVELOPED FOR THE ASIA AWARDS.
This project is a continuation of the Foam exhibition enterprise. Polyurethane foam is a cheap insulator material used widely in construction sites. When it solidifies it expands and becomes extremely light. Hypertrophy is the abnormal enlargement or excessive growth of a part or organ.
This project counters the organic delicacy, lightness and subtetly of traditional japanese aesthetics against its exhuberant contemporary pop culture. Hypertrophy is cheap, but also whimsical. It is unapologetically artificial, but also tectonic. Used conventionally it is a mundane material, however when it is backlit it becomes translucent and somewhat hallucinogenic.
